The Apple Mac mini 'Core i5' 2.6 (Late 2014/Aluminum Unibody) features a 22 nm 'Haswell' 2.6 GHz Intel 'Core i5' (4278U) processor with two independent processor 'cores' on a single chip, a 3 MB shared level 3 cache, 8 GB of onboard 1600 MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM, various hard drive options, and an 'integrated' Intel Iris 5100 graphics processor that shares system memory. If there's a common cable, Target Disk Mode can be used, but these two Macs don't both have FireWire or Thunderbolt. Target Disk Mode — if you had a common cable pairing, which you don't — would allow running the old Mac as an external disk of the new Mac. That would allow TM to use the old Mac as a target for Time Machine.


One possible approach would be to buy and configure the old Mac Mini with OS X Server (Server.app) and use it as a Time Machine target via the network. That's rather more complex than some folks want to deal with, and there's a small fee for OS X Server in the Mac App Store.

You could connect via the network and manually drag files and archives over to it, or write a bash or other script to automate that process. Two Macs can share files via the network.

But as for your question, Time Machine doesn't support a random Mac as a target, though — unless it's configured as a server.
